During the period of Anti-Japanese War, there was a troops appearing and disappearing without trace on Baiyngdian. They occasionally disguised as fishermen ingeniously breaking down the enemy’s watchtower; occasionally intercepted and captured the enemy’s ammunition and other materials appearing on their delivery route; occasionally entered the “heart” of enemy and got rid of traitors for people; occasionally concealed in the reed marshes and ambushed the enemy’s boats with lotus on their heads and reed stem in their mouths. This is the water guerrilla on Baiyangdian—Goose Plume Possecomitatus, which made enemy become terror-stricken at the news and made people elated.
In the autumn of 1939, Japanese army forced hunters to surrender their self-made roers and cannons in Baiyangdian in the name of dedicating iron and copper; otherwise they will be punished for privately storing ammunitions. If the hunters hand over their roers and cannons, that means they lost their job, so everyone was filled with indignation and hopping mad. In connection with people’s unsatisfied mind, Anti-Japanese District Committee developed propaganda immediately and disclosed the intrigue that Japanese invasion force wanted to disintegrate the force of war of resistance. At that time, Xu Jian, secretary of District Party committee and Li Gangyi, Warden of District, leading three small groups, hurried to Dazhangzhuang village by night and held a meeting for hunters of Guolikou, Wangjiazhai and other water-bound villages. In the meeting, they called on the common people joining up to extinguish Japanese invasion force and protect our home and country. So people were greatly inspired, and there were more than 20 people signed up and joined up the army on the spot. They use their own boats and guns, and were organized as a squad beginning to ambush enemy on the water. They often plugged into a piece of goose plume at the ignition position of the gun to prevent power to be affected with damp in the bore of a gun. Moreover, when they started out, the route of their boats maintained herringbone that was made when they were hunting geese before, just like the form of flocks of geese. So Secretary of County Committee Hou Zhoufu named them Goose Plume Possecomitatus. The Possecomitatus wisely, bravely nnihilated enemy by surprise and make them extremely fearful through making use of the vantage ground, the natural barrier—reed marshes and many channels vertically and horizontally.
One afternoon in May 1941, the Goose Plume Possecomitatus ambushed in the reed marshes between Dazhangzhuang and Wangjiazhai and were ready to assault Japanese invaders. After 3 p.m., Japanese devil’s patrol boats came, then more than 20 guns fired at the same time, and over 20 devils were killed then and there. When the enemy’s reinforcement came, our Goose Plume Possecomitatus had already hided their boats and guns, and swum back to Nilizhuang, with lotus on head and reed stem in mouth. After this battle, Goose Plume Possecomitatus had one more name—Lotus Army.
In March 1942, Japanese built 38 watchtowers in the shallow lake region, and set up a fake town every several tens of villages. Japanese invasions and traitors committed every kind of crimein villages, so people there complained bitterly at that time. Especially, there were three cocks of traitors from Wangjiazhai and Guolikou, namely Han Enrong, Feng Dexin and Cao Maolin, these three were called “three evils” by people there. To turn the scale, the county committee decided to develop battle against them centering on annoying the enemy’s stronghold, seizing guns and getting rid of traitors. One night in the autumn, fake Forman Han Enrong from the stronghold of Wangjiazhai came out to buy food and drink, when two vendors came over with basket carrying on their arms and cried out, “who buy roast chicken, smoked fish, hot and hot.” This was just exactly as his hopes for, so he stopped the vendors and wanted to see. Just at the moment when Han Enrong went down to see, the vendors suddenly lifted the cloth and rapidly drew out a handgun below the roast chicken and said, “don’t move, hand up, we are Goose Plume Possecomitatus.” Han Enrong was feared to kneel down on the ground bumpily and flagitated, then someone thundered, “Han Enrong, you betrayed and went to the enemy, cruelly kill people, now today is your dead day!” With that concluding word, the man threw Han Enrong off with one shoot, immediately Han’s head seemed to explode, then he stuck one piece of white cloth on his body on which he marked him with a “big fresh red tick”. When the news spreaded, all people in Baiyangdian were gleefully hail. Soon, Goose Plume Possecomitatus ingeniously occupied the stronghold of Guolikou again, and executed Feng Dexin and Cao Maolin, these two heinous traitors.
In 1943, Goose Plume Possecomitatus destroyed several watchtowers—Shifangyuan, Zhangzhuangzi and Dadiantou and captured more than 100 enemies without one shooting. One of the famous campaigns in the ambush battle is the one that Goose Plume Possecomitatus attacked the delivery boat. On Oct. 4th 1943, Goose Plume Possecomitatus knew that the enemy would deliver large lot of material to Baoding and was ready to escape according to the report of scout Zhao Bo, after negotiations they decided to intercept the material and without one grain of rice and one string of thread coming out of Baiyangdian.
Early in the morning of the second day, the Goose Plume Possecomitatus led by headman Zheng Shaochen, ambushed in the reed marshes of the two sides of Wangjiazhai, about 8 a.m., the enemy’s boats gradually came into our ambuscade when Zheng Shaochen knocked out the enemy’s sentry post with one shoot, immediately after this all guns fired to the enemy, in a split second, two front boats of the enemy had been controlled by the Goose Plume Possecomitatus, and now none but enemy on the third boat made stubborn resistance with the heavy machine guns on the fore shooting endlessly, by this time three members of the Goose Plume Possecomitatus were shot and sacrifice their lives bravely and gloriously. Then Zheng Shaochen together with one part of members went from the rear, the enemy had to lay down their weapons and surrendered without protest being attacked from front and behind.
This combat successfully intercepted the enemy’s entire material, and completely accomplished the assignment handed by the higher-up. From then on, Japanese army completely turned to a condition of passively being hit in Baiyangdian.
In the four years from 1939 to 1943, the Goose Plume Possecomitatus won 16 campaigns without one shooting among 35 battles, so they have the name of “divine solders on Baiyangdian”. Now sides of reed pond in the east of Wangjiazhai village are the place where the Goose Plume Possecomitatus lashed out the devil’s delivery boats.
