Baiyangdian was called Juelidian in the ancient time and another name was Baiyangdian. It is also called West Dian, locating in the east part of Anxin county and respectively being apart from Beijing, Tianjin and Shijiazhuang about 150 km. It is the biggest ancient fresh water lake in the plain of north China, and it has the name of“west lake in the north” and “south of the Yangtze River in the north”, also has the reputation of “a land flowing with milk and honey” and “pearl of north China”. It is the place many emperors often traveled and heroes come forth in great number. There are 143 shallow lake berths among which there are 99 shallow lake berths above 100 mu, and the biggest among them is Baiyangdian. The shallow lake is called like this because there is a beautiful legend: long long time ago, there was a very beautiful fairy on the heaven who was in charge of all rivers and lakes in the world. She was very virtuous and often rained for poor people rescuing them from drought. In every bright moon night, she wore pure white dress and visited here and there with a jade bottle in hands. One day she came to the heaven below which there was a vast area land, when seeing the land cracked because of drought she couldn’t help signing one after another. So she slightly inclined the bottle and poured, but she casually broke the bottle on the ground. The jade bottle was broken into 99 pieces, and immediately the pieces turned into 99 big shallow lakes connecting each other. The flower in the bottle turned into fragrant pink and white lotus, and the lotus attracted millions of water birds. Since then here turned into 99 big shallow lakes closely connecting each other. This is today’s Baiyangdian.
With the total area of 366 sq. km, Baiyangdian possesses vast water area among which 85% is in Anxin, and the shallow lake area is divided into 143 shallow lake berths with different sizes and shapes by 39 villages, 3,700 channels and 120,000 mu reed and Baiyangdian’s area is the biggest among them, so the whole shallow lake was named as Baiyangdian by this big one.
Baiyangdian enjoys comfort climate, extreme beautiful landscape through four seasons. When spring comes, sprouts of reeds come out one after another and the whole shallow lake is green like jade; in every summer, reeds are green and lotus are red, and willows along the bank sway slightly; in autumn, flowers of reeds fly like snowing and there is rice fragrant in the air; in winter, the lake surface is as hard as a boundless jade.
